Our records suggest there are at least 53 commercially active m-payment projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, including m-wallet services, solutions to incorporate existing credit cards into the handset, m-POS systems and platforms for disbursing government benefits. Some countries have up to nine different systems running simultaneously, and there are at least eight projects that are on the way to having full regional coverage. Word in the industry is that there is plenty of room for more. Our November Telecom Intelligence Series discusses the reasoning behind this multitude of projects and how they promise to benefit the region's substantial unbanked population.
