Product Details

Coal is a relatively minor player in Latin America's electricity sector. The region has largely remained on the sidelines of the coal power boom of the last decade, mostly notably in China. Electricity produced via coal combustion makes up roughly 40% of the global supply, versus around 5% in Latin America. There are, however, a few exceptions. Local market conditions have favored the construction of new coal-fired plants in certain countries. On the other hand, increasing social opposition throughout the region has made it harder to break ground on new projects.
