The number of journeys taken on the Santiago subway system has nearly doubled since the implementation of the Transantiago public transportation system in 2007. The heavy increase in new users of the Santiago subway system has put the current infrastructure of 104 km of tracks -split into five lines- under great strain. The state-owned company has embarked on the most ambitious expansion in its history: it will invest some US$2.76 billion in the construction of two new lines that will expand the network by 36%.
