The private equity market in Latin America is small compared to those in more mature markets, but in the last few years activity has escalated. Brazil is by far the largest market in the region - of the US$8.4bn that was raised by Latin American funds in 2011, 85% of the total was raised in Brazil. The country has enjoyed stable economic growth and rapid expansion of the middle class, which has spurred domestic demand. It can be difficult for businesses to obtain access to capital, given the high cost of credit across the region and a less developed financial system, and private equity is thus seen as a viable solution. This is a trend which is playing out across the region, with markets such as Colombia and Mexico looking set to benefit from increased private equity investment over the coming years.
