Latin American banks are preparing to face a year of tough challenges. With GDP falling or stagnant in Brazil, Venezuela and Argentina, coupled with the economic slowdown in Chile and Colombia and the still weak growth in Mexico, the main focus of banks in 2016 will be asset quality rather than lending growth. While it is anticipated that an increase in delinquency will result in lower profitability, Latin American banks will enter this negative cycle with solid margins. Also, as lower lending growth is expected in most countries, no capital pressures on banks are projected. Neither will a reduced level of liquidity be a cause for alarm in 2016. The good news, then, is that in general banks in the region look prepared to face the changing economic climate. Nevertheless, political and economic uncertainties in 2016 will test the financial and operating performance of banks and insurers in much of Latin America.
